History of our department

A brief overview

For a long time, our department has designed the curriculum of our students keeping in mind the final teaching certification in Visual Arts. Since a Master degree was required in order to obtain the teaching certification, during their first three years, our students followed classes at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne to complete their Master in Visual Arts (Bachelor, Master 1 and 2). Their last year was dedicated to the preparation of « Agrégation » at ENS de Cachan.

During the 90's, a new option was created called « Applied arts » (Arts appliqués) within the general teaching certification in Arts. This made it possible for us to offer to our students two different curricula. The classic one was one year of Bachelor in Applied Arts, plus one year of Master 1 in Applied Arts at the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, followed by preparation of the Agrégation at ENS de Cachan, ending the cycle with one year Master 2 in Applied Arts at the University. Alternatively, students might choose a more practical and professional two-year curriculum called : DSAA « Diplôme Supérieur d'Arts Appliqués ». Those two years were followed by preparation of the Agrégation at ENS de Cachan, ending the cycle with one year Master 2 in Applied Arts at the University.

By the end of those four years, students of ENS de Cachan will earn the double titles of designer and certified teacher, provided that they have received their practical diploma (DSAA, ENSCI, ENSAD, or others). Some of them may apply to scholarship to fund their research leading to a Doctorate degree and a career as scholar.
